Eyelash History

Beauty legend has it that American movie director D.W. Griffith designed the first set of false eyelashes, while creating a motion picture in 1916. He wanted his leading lady Phyllis Haver to have eyelashes so long that they graced her cheeks when she blinked or looked down.

A wig maker set to work creating the eyelashes out of human hair and gauze, and the result was movie magic. Unfortunately the film was not, and the screenplay became unforgettable. However, false eyelashes were remembered to the misfortune of Griffith who never formally made a claim to their fame and had his idea simulated, stolen, and altered in the decades to come.

Since 1916 there have been many of leading ladies and celebrities who used false eyelashes. Twiggy is an example of someone in the spotlight who used falsies in the way that they were intended. Eyelashes has always been a statement for the "The Art Of A Lady". They have been used on cartoon characters such as Betty Boop, Judy Jetson, Miss Piggy and Olive Oil (Of Popeye). TV characters such as Lucy(I Love Lucy), Samantha(Bewitched), Genie( I Dream of Genie), and Ginger from Gilligans Island are just a few  who have been glamorized by wearing eyelash extensions. Today eyelash extensions are the fastest growing beauty trend in the world. Find out what all of the hype is about surrounded by this must have beauty service.

About Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash Extensions are synthetic lashes that are attached to an individuals natural lashes using a special adhesive.  The lashes come in different lengths, curls and thickness’ which makes it possible to customize the application.  manufactured by hand or by machine, most eyelash extensions are made from polyester to imitate human lashes and other materials such as mink and silk.  Real mink fur as well as human hair are also used.

Created in Asia in the late 1990’s, this beauty trend has made its mark around the world.  Eyelash extensions were once a beauty secret to Hollywood but is now becoming a welcomed addition to the everyday woman's beauty regiment.  The popularity of extensions continue to grow as it is the most innovative way to add length and volume to your own natural lashes without the need for mascara.

Semi permanent individual eyelash extensions can last up to 2 months with proper care and regular maintenance.  The life cycle of eyelashes is around  45 to 90 days after which it falls out, along with the extension; a new lash immediately grows in its place – therefore, a touch-up application is needed to replace the fallen lashes and to keep eyelashes looking fresh.

Flares are another alternative for eyelash extensions, lasting from 1 to 2 weeks, it is a great choice for a special occasion.

How long will my Individual Flare Extensions last? Our eyelash flares are temporary and may last up to 2 weeks depending on the after care. A real lash life cycle is around 25-28 days and as yours grow and fall out, so will the synthetic ones that are attached. If your hair and nails grow quickly then that means that your lashes will also be growing, shedding and renewing themselves quickly. You may find that your lashes may not last as long as someone with slow hair growth. Your lifestyle and the type of work you do will also have a bearing on how long they will last. A person who works in the food industry, where there is alot of heat, steam and oil may not last as well as someone who works in an air conditioned office.

Will I lose any of my own natural eyelashes? As long as you do not pull your eyelashes, you do not have to worry.

Does your glue contain formaldehyde? There is no formaldehyde or cyano acrylate (crazy glue) in our adhesive. Formaldehyde will irritate your eyes.

What type of glue do you use? We use three different types of glue. Each one is formulated for a certain wear time and application process. Please schedule an appointment for further details on our glue.Due to our competitor's inquisitiveness,  we only expose this information to actual clients.

How long are each of the flares? We have four different lengths for the flares; mini, short, med and long.

Are the extensions glued to my skin? No, they are applied 1mm away from your eye lid to your natural lashes.

I pull out my own natural lashes, can I replace them with Individuals? Individuals lash extension are flares that need to be attached to your own natural lashes. The adhesive is formulated to attach to hair, therefore the glue will not adhere to your skin, only your natural lash. You will not be a good client for lash extensions since you pull out your lashes in patches or clumps. You may try an eyelash strip since they attach to the upper eyelid skin,

Can I use an eyelash curler to curl my individual lash extensions? No, an eyelash curler will weaken and cause them to lift and come off.

Can I wear mascara? Yes, but we recommend you use mascara formulated for extensions. Mascara will also shorten the life of your lash extensions. Flirt & Flutter suggest you try to avoid mascara. You can roll out of bed looking great and young as ever. Best of all, it will make your lashes look like you are wearing mascara 24/7 without the clumping, streaking, smudging look that you get from mascara useage. No more running and streaking mascara which is fantastic for brides on their wedding day.

Can I still wear I makeup? Yes, but you don't need mascara and you may find that you won't need eyeliner. You may still use eyeliner or eyeshadow, but remember to remove with a product that does not contain oil of any kind  as this will affect the glue. Flirt & Flutter carries after care products that will help extend the life of your individual lash extensions.

Will you provide me with aftercare instructions? Yes, all clients receive aftercare instruction cards after each visit.

Is there any reason why I can't have eyelash extensions applied- Contra indications?

The following clients may not wear eyelash extensions

Miss Eye Rubber- It is suggested that if you are an "eye-rubber" due to allergies such as hay fever or rubbing your eyes is a habit, you may not be able to wear extensions.

Miss Sensitivity- Having irritation around the eye area after using skin care or makeup, extensions may not suit you.

Miss Sneezy Sniffles- If you have a cold, sinus or allergy infection, please do not have this service done! Your lashes will not last a long time due to secretions and irritation from the eye area.

Miss Curly Q-Due to your lashes being curly you are definitely not a good candidate for extensions.Lash extensions must be applied to straight lashes to lay properly. Curly lashes tend to shorten the lash wear time. Generally, people with curly lashes, extensions may only last up to three days before they start to lift. If you have curly lashes we recommend that you purchase products from Flirt & Flutter to get your lashes straight. After treatment of the lashes you may then try this service.

Miss "I Have No Lashes"- A person with out any lashes may not wear lashes because there is no where to place them. Extensions must be placed on the natural lash and not the skin. These clients must refer to a strip lash.

The Golden Rule for wearing eyelash extensions:

"The Less You Touch Them, The Longer They Will Last!" However it is important to keep the eye area clean.
